We all need effective ways of getting increased web site traffic. More traffic gives the best chance of more sales. That's a no-brainer. You know it as well as I do.
Today I want to talk a little more about using free safelists as a way of getting traffic. Yes, I said before that they don't work real well nowadays. But that doesn't mean you don't stand a chance of getting some results from safelists.
Basically, how a safelist works is, you join the list and agree to receive other people's ads in your email box. In return, you can email your ad to the other people on the list. Hopefully, some of them will click through to your website. That's how you get traffic from a safelist.
So, it's free (or low-cost) to get your message out there, but it does take TIME to read the other ads coming into your email.
I'm not an expert on this next tip, as I personally haven't done much with safelists recently. But I've been told that the way to go... IF you're going to use safe lists... is to use credit-based lists. With this type of safe list, you can either buy credits, or earn free credits by reading other people's ads. The more credits you have, the more times YOUR ad can be delivered to people on the email list.
Well, an online colleague of mine accidentally discovered a secret for earning the most credits in the shortest amount of time. The secret? With that particular safelist, at least, you would earn 100 credits for viewing a solo ad for 15 seconds, but you would only earn 40 credits for viewing a regular ad for those same 15 seconds.
So the key is to recognize which ads are solo ads BEFORE you choose which ads to read. Then focus primarily on reading solo ads, especially on days when your time is limited.
First, find out if the safelist you are using works in a similar way. Then figure out how the message subject lines are tagged to show if it's a solo ad or not. Each safelist has its own way to show this. It might say "solo" or SA, or something like that in the subject.
So when you've deciphered the specific tag that your safelist is using, now you can be sure to read the solo ads first, and earn the most credits in the shortest amount of time.
But once again, you'll be spending your TIME to do all this, every day, and MAYBE getting some results... or not.
In my opinion, it is still better to take that same amount of time and effort to follow some Web 2.0 methods every day. These up-to-date methods will be much more effective than safelists or other old-fashioned ways of advertising.
Why?
For one thing, when you interact with people in social settings (Facebook, for example), they start to feel like they know you. They feel like they can trust you. It's totally different from just sending out ads to total strangers who don't have a clue if you're trying to rip them off or not.
Another reason is that Web 2.0 methods have cumulative effects. Your links stay out there to be found over and over again.
But if you just send messages to safelists, they are quickly deleted. And that's true even if you pay to send solo ads, or any other email advertising method. Same for online classifieds, which quickly disappear from view, as we mentioned before.
Besides, it's just more fun. Wouldn't you rather spend your time getting acquainted with people instead of just reading and sending ads?

More Ideas For Getting Increased Web Site Traffic
Yesterday we looked at some ways of getting increased web site traffic. The more traffic you can bring to your site, the more sales you are likely to make.
Just HOW successful your site will be depends on some other factors, too, of course. For example, ask yourself:
There are ways of tracking your traffic and testing different versions of your website to see which version converts best. But I won't get into any of that right now, because........
In order to even TEST anything, you FIRST must have adequate traffic coming to your site! Traffic is the first step.
So we're right back to finding ways to increase your site traffic. Assuming your chosen product is of value to somebody and the sales page is half-way decent, you need to focus on getting more visitors.
Yesterday I covered several methods of generating traffic. We looked briefly at safe lists, free classifieds, and PPC (pay per click) advertising. I also talked a little about the "Web 2.0" phenomena that's becoming extremely popular.
Today we'll examine another traffic method called a link exchange.
As you may know, in-bound links (links from other places in cyber-space pointing to your site) help your site get noticed. People may follow these links to your site from another site. Even more importantly, the search engine "spiders" will follow the links and find your site.
When there are lots of sites that link to yours, the perception is that your site must be providing valuable content. So in-bound links from relevant sites will greatly increase your search engine ranking.
In the early days, some of the pioneers of Internet Marketing made millions from the old-fashioned "link farm" method. Basically, they gathered a bunch of links from just any old unrelated website... and they still made money. But this doesn't work nowadays! Not at all. Search engines are way more sophisticated today. You must have relevant links.
So the simplest way would be to find sites you like, sites that complement yours without being a direct competitor for the same products. Then you just approach the site owners directly and ask them to exchange links with you. It's a win-win situation, so they would probably say yes. There are "link exchanges" set up where you can find relevant sites willing to exchange links with you.
A couple of things to keep in mind if you go the link exchange route:
1. Be sure the content of the linked site is appropriate for your target audience. You don't want to send your visitors to a site where something offends or insults them, for example. You want it to be a resource your visitors will appreciate you for.
2. Monitor the site you link to on a regular basis. Be sure it is still online and the link is still good. Don't lose credibility with your visitors by giving them links that don't work.
There's one big drawback to using the link exchange method, however.
Any time you put a link on your page to someone else's page, you are sending your visitors away from you! Think about it! All that hard work to get traffic, and then send people away before they buy your product? Hmmm... Doesn't sound so smart, does it?
But there's a great way to get in-bound links to your site without needing to use any out-bound links. No exchange involved, only in-bound links from out in cyberspace.
How???
I'll tell you next time. (No, just kidding....)
That's the beauty of Web 2.0, or social marketing methods. You yourself are putting links back to your site from all over cyberspace! You create a Facebook profile, for example, and link back to your website. You create a Squidoo lens with a link to your site. You create a blog, and link to your site.
You comment on someone else's blog, or in a forum, and it links back to your site. You write an article and submit it to an article directory, with a link back to your website. (Article marketing has actually been around for a while, so it might not officially be considered "Web 2.0".)
But are you getting the idea? Web 2.0 is the best way to go... and like I said yesterday, it's fun. It's a great way to "work" because it's enjoyable to be connecting with other people through social media. So it doesn't feel like work, yet it gets results.

Just HOW successful your site will be depends on some other factors, too, of course. For example, ask yourself:
- How well does my site convert visitors to buyers?
- Is the product priced appropriately?
- Do people actually need or want what I'm selling?
- If so, are the right people (right target audience) finding my website?
